Un-Egg-Citing Struggles

Getting these “simple” egg heads to have proper construction has been difficult. These horizontal eggs are harder to do than the previous vertical ones. Being that they’re boring drawings to begin with doesn’t help either.

Preston Blair: Once More From The Top

I'm going to hit the reset button once more and start at the beginning of the Preston Blair lessons. I really want to grasp this stuff before moving on to more fun and interesting drawings.

Which Came First, The Cranium Or The Egg?

Here's my attempt at copying the vertical egg heads. I enlarged the heads to approximately 2.5 inches. This made it easier to copy and pick up certain subtleties that I hadn't noticed.

I've scaled and rotated my copy for comparison; the images show (left to right) the original drawing, my copy, and my copy overlaid with the original.

Anything you can see in these practices that could help me?

Simple Layout?!!

Here I am copying a frame from the great Howie Post
that aspiring cartoonists have been trying.




My First Attempt



This didn't work out too good.
I blocked in the background elements first
and didn't leave enough room for the main characters.


My Second Attempt



Better, but I wasn't satisfied with
the way the dust trail was coming out.

My Third Attempt



I erased the trail in Photoshop, printed it out and did the trail again.

My Cleaned-Up Final



It's not as accurate as I'd like -
the main tree's trunk is wider in the original.
I made the main characters taller and longer.
The horse's muzzle should be smaller and point more downward.
The three groupings of tree foliage on the right
need to go down further.
It was pretty hard getting the variety of the circular foliage.

Got a new computer up and running.

Basil Wolverton is just too fun to copy, so I had to do more.

Are You Ruff And Reddy?

I challenged myself with a Hanna Barbera study this time.
I took a long time finishing it.





For some reason Ruff's right foot was trouble.
When I added the toes the main form seemed to break up.
Had problem's with Reddy's tie too.
